Spirit Faith Grace Rage:
African Spiritual Culture in America

In one year, I photographed almost exclusively in one church in Brooklyn, New York. I have given photographs from this effort to the church and to members; I have exhibited them in galleries and museums, and published them on church fans, in Life Magazine and in The New York Times. More notably, it was in that church that I understood the power of communal singing, testifying and praying out loud, and realized the value of connecting with the spirit and with others.
