I have been photographing family members in Birmingham since 1973. It was in 1991 when I first ventured downtown from the Black suburb of Pratt City.

I went to the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, The Birmingham Museum of Art, and the Birmingham Public Library.

I returned home to find my entire family sitting in the livingroom, anxiously awaiting my return. It was shocking to me that, in 1991, my family would have to be worried about me.

Maybe things hadn’t changed...
